What Error E013 Means
Error E013 on Yamaha PW eBike systems is a battery authentication failure. The motor controller performs a cryptographic authentication check with the battery BMS on every connection. This verifies that the battery is a genuine Yamaha-approved unit and that the batterys internal data matches expected parameters. If the authentication exchange fails — for any reason — E013 is raised and motor assistance is disabled.
Causes
- Non-genuine battery — Any battery that is not an original Yamaha-approved product fails authentication.
- Dirty or corroded communication contacts — Corrosion on the data pins (separate from the main power contacts) prevents the authentication data exchange from completing successfully.
- BMS firmware incompatibility — After a motor controller firmware update, older battery BMS firmware versions may fail the updated authentication protocol.
- Failed battery authentication circuit — A genuine battery with an internal BMS fault may fail authentication even when otherwise functional.
Fix Procedure
Step 1: Verify Battery Authenticity
Check for the Yamaha Genuine Parts marking and model number on the battery label. Yamaha batteries are model-specific — confirm that the battery is designed for your motor generation (PW vs PW-X vs PW-X2/X3).
Step 2: Clean Communication Contacts
Remove the battery and clean all contacts — including the smaller data communication pins alongside the main power contacts — with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Allow to dry fully before reinstalling.
Step 3: Test with Known-Good Battery
If another compatible genuine Yamaha battery is available, test with it. If E013 clears, the fault is in your battery. If E013 persists with a known-good genuine battery, the authentication circuit in the drive unit has failed.
