What Error E002 Means

Error E002 on Yamaha PW eBike systems indicates that the drive unit has detected an internal fault in its electronics or sensors. Unlike sensor errors (W010, W011, W012) which involve external or interface components, E002 points to a fault that is internal to the sealed motor housing — power electronics, internal communication buses, or sensor signal processing circuits. Motor assistance is disabled.

Limited self-diagnosis: Error E002 cannot be fully diagnosed without the Yamaha diagnostic tool. The steps below eliminate common transient causes before committing to a dealer visit.

Self-Checks Before Dealer Visit

Step 1: Full Power Cycle

Remove the battery for 60 seconds. With the battery removed, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to discharge any residual capacitor charge. Reinstall the battery and power on. Transient internal faults caused by firmware assertion errors or voltage spikes occasionally clear after a full controller discharge.

Step 2: Check All External Connectors

Inspect every external connector on the motor unit — display cable, battery contacts, speed sensor connector, and any accessory connectors. A faulty external connector feeding corrupted signals into the motor controller can trigger an internal fault flag that presents as E002.

Step 3: Check for Crash or Impact History

If E002 appeared after a crash, fall, or significant impact to the drive side of the bike, an internal component may have been physically damaged. Note this for the dealer — it will affect the warranty assessment.

Dealer Resolution

Persistent E002 requires the Yamaha diagnostic tool to read the sub-error code stored in the motor controller. This identifies the specific internal component that has failed. Most E002 faults result in drive unit replacement. Yamaha provides a 2-year warranty on drive units, and E002 faults without evidence of physical damage or liquid ingress are typically covered.
