What Error E014 Means

Error E014 on Shimano STEPS systems is the error-level counterpart to warning W011 — both cover the speed sensor, but E014 indicates a more persistent or severe speed signal fault that the system has escalated from warning to error status. Motor assistance is typically fully disabled with E014 active, unlike the partially limited state produced by W011.

Fix Procedure

Step 1: Full Spoke Magnet Inspection

Remove the rear wheel and inspect the spoke magnet closely. Check that it is not cracked, that the bolt securing it to the spoke is intact, and that the magnet face is smooth and undamaged. A damaged magnet surface produces a weaker signal that triggers E014 rather than the less severe W011.

Step 2: Set Precise Sensor Gap

Reinstall the wheel and set the magnet-to-sensor gap to 5 to 10 mm — within the 3 to 17 mm specification but at the optimum centre of range. An E014 fault that occurred with a 15 mm gap (at the permissible edge) will often clear when reduced to 7 mm.

Step 3: Community Self-Clearing Technique

A proven community approach for E014 on older STEPS systems: after correctly aligning the magnet, ride gently for 3 to 5 minutes with the error still displayed. As the system receives consistent speed signals on each wheel rotation, E014 can self-clear without requiring a dealer tool reset. This works because the STEPS controller requires a minimum number of consecutive valid readings before clearing the error flag. Power cycling alone does not achieve this — the bike must be ridden.

Step 4: Inspect Sensor and Cable

If E014 persists after riding 5 minutes with correct alignment, the sensor or its cable has physically failed. Shimano speed sensors are relatively inexpensive and user-replaceable — the sensor body clips or bolts to the chainstay. Replace the sensor and cable as an assembly.
