Shimano STEPS Display Types

Shimano STEPS systems use a range of display units depending on the motor generation and intended use. Common models include the SC-E6100 (trekking/urban), SC-E7000 (sport), SC-E8000 (trail/MTB), and SC-E5003 (entry). All use the same EW-SD50 wired connection or, on newer installations, a Bluetooth connection to the motor.

Common Display Faults

  • Blank or dark display — No power reaching the display, or display PCB has failed
  • E020 involving the display — Display connector or cable is causing the communication error
  • Display works but shows wrong data — Firmware mismatch between display and motor
  • Specific buttons not responding — Button membrane or PCB contact failure
  • Display randomly powers off mid-ride — Intermittent cable connection

Fix Procedure

Step 1: Check Display Connector

Disconnect the EW-SD50 cable from the display port. Inspect both the cable plug and the display port for bent or corroded pins. Clean with contact cleaner and reconnect firmly.

Step 2: Check Cable Run

Trace the display cable along its routing. Tight bends at the handlebar clamp cause flex fatigue — the cable can break internally while the outer sheath remains intact. The display powering off when the bar is turned to a specific angle confirms this diagnosis.

Step 3: Update Display Firmware

Via the E-Tube Project app, check if the display has a pending firmware update. E033 (firmware mismatch) affecting the display produces erratic data display and communication errors.

Step 4: Replace the Display

Shimano STEPS displays are user-replaceable — they clip onto a proprietary mount and connect via the EW-SD50 cable without tools. Replacement costs range from approximately EUR 60 for an SC-E5003 to EUR 150 for an SC-E8000. Always confirm compatibility between the display model and your motor generation before purchasing.
