What Error 540 Means

Error 540 is a thermal protection shutdown. The drive unit monitors motor winding and power electronics temperatures via NTC sensors. When either exceeds the safe threshold — typically 120 degrees C for windings and 80 degrees C for power electronics — the controller raises error 540 and cuts motor output to prevent permanent damage. This error is the system working correctly.

Cooldown Procedure

  1. Stop and pull over safely.
  2. Leave the battery installed and system on.
  3. Find shade if possible.
  4. Wait 15 to 25 minutes.
  5. Do not pour cold water on the motor — thermal shock can damage solder joints.
  6. Power off and back on. Error 540 clears automatically when temperature drops below the reset threshold.

Prevention

On sustained climbs, shift to a lower gear and target 70 to 90 RPM cadence. High torque at low cadence is the most thermally intensive operating mode. Use Trail or Tour assist rather than Turbo on climbs lasting more than 10 minutes.
