What Error 531 Means

Error 531 signals a system configuration error — typically a mismatch between the firmware version or configuration parameters stored in one component versus what another expects. This most commonly appears after a firmware update applied to some components but not others, creating a protocol incompatibility.

Fix Procedure

Step 1: Apply All Available Firmware Updates

On Smart System bikes, open the eBike Flow app and update all components — motor, display, battery, and accessories. All components must be at current firmware versions. Do not interrupt the update process.

Step 2: System Reset via Diagnostic Tool

If the configuration error persists after updating all firmware, a dealer must use the DiagnosticsTool 3 to perform a full system configuration reset.

Step 3: Check for Incompatible Components

Error 531 also appears after replacing a component with one from a different Bosch system generation. System2 and Smart System components are not interchangeable.
